Mrs. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s, President of the 73<sup>rd<\/sup> Session of the UN General Assembly<\/h3>\n<p><strong><span class=\"updated\">18 December 2018<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-174035 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/12\/estaaaaa-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/12\/estaaaaa-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/12\/estaaaaa-150x107.png 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/12\/estaaaaa-400x284.png 400w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/12\/estaaaaa.png 672w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, Secretary General<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights,<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>It is my honor to preside this ceremony to award the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948, was one of the stellar moments of universal history and, without a doubt, it has been one of the greatest legacies of the General Assembly to humanity.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.4&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>This Prize was created to celebrate the extraordinary demonstration of fraternity and solidarity of men and women who suffered two world wars and set out to avoid them for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, on the twentieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration, this prize was awarded for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.4&#8243;]\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"250\" src=\"\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/1362235914001\/B1J3DDQJf_default\/index.html?videoId=5981067246001\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->[\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.4&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the prize has been awarded every five years to more than sixty individuals and organizations of all regions that have excelled in various fields of human rights and have contributed to keep the ideals of freedom, peace and justice alive in the world.<\/p>\n<p>All prizewinners share the vision that a better future is possible. Their struggles encompass the rights of women, children, migrants and refugees, persons with disabilities; the abolition of slavery and fighting racial discrimination; demanding truth, justice and reparation for enforced disappearances and torture; the eradication of poverty, hunger and denouncing other social and economic injustices; as well as the tireless search for answers to crimes and violations of human rights, even when their own lives and security are at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Malala Youssef, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Amnesty International are only a few of the winners of this prize.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>In its tenth edition, we celebrate seventy years of the Universal Declaration and we pay a well deserved tribute to those who contribute to turn it into a reality.<\/p>\n<p>I wish to take this opportunity to emphasize the impeccable process that the Special Committee to select the winners has delivered under the leadership of the former President of the General Assembly, Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;3.17.4&#8243; author=&#8221;Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s&#8221; portrait_url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/09\/PGA-73084-e1537294481964.jpg&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; job_title=&#8221;President of the UN General Assembly&#8221; quote_icon_background_color=&#8221;#f5f5f5&#8243; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; quote_icon_color=&#8221;#00aff8&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">All prizewinners share the vision that a better future is possible.
