PRESIDENT MAR\u00cdA FERNANDA\u00a0ESPINOSA TRAVELS TO QATAR<\/strong><\/p>\n
The President of the General Assembly, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa, is travelling to Qatar, where she will start an official visit tomorrow, 13 December.<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa will be a guest speaker at a seminar being organised by the College of Law at Qatar University.\u00a0 It is titled; \u201cMultilateralism under Threat: the challenges facing the UN in the lead-up to its 75th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary\u201d.<\/p>\n
In Doha, the PGA will also visit a Centre for People with Disabilities and the Qatar Foundation for Social Work. Ms. Espinosa will attend an event at the Qatar National Library and visit the Museum of Islamic Art. Ms. Espinosa will be a guest speaker at the Doha Forum and will meet with representatives of the Qatari government. She will return to New York on 16 December. The PGA\u2019s delegation includes her Chef de Cabinet, her adviser on Peace and Security, a coordination officer and a communications adviser, as well as her personal assistant. All travel costs are covered by the State of Qatar.<\/p>\n
GLOBAL COMPACT ON MIGRATION TO BE ENDORSED BY GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa delivered a speech at the closing ceremony of the Intergovernmental Conference on the Global Compact for Migration, in Marrakech, Morocco, yesterday. The President of the General Assembly informed the Conference that on 19 December the General Assembly plenary shall proceed with the formal endorsement of the Compact in a session at the GA Hall. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms. Espinosa said that, pursuant to the mandate that was conferred to her by Member States, she will designate co-facilitators to carry intergovernmental consultations to define the modalities of the\u00a0\u201cInternational Migration Review Forum\u201d, which will examine the progress of the implementation of the Compact, every four years, starting in 2022.<\/p>\n
The PGA also requested every country to disseminate the contents of the Compact to all members of society so that information is shared, and erroneous interpretations avoided. The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was adopted in Marrakech on Monday, 10 December, by consensus.<\/p>\n
PGA\u2019s AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n
Whilst in Marrakech, she granted an interview to EFE news agency, France24 and M2, the Moroccan TV channel. \u00a0Ms. Espinosa also held bilateral meetings with representatives of Canada, the Holy See, as well as the President of Panama and the Foreign Minister of Rwanda. Ms. Espinosa also met with representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society.<\/p>\n
