Andrea Pontiroli

Senior Adviser | Migration, Refugees, Humanitarian Issues

Andrea Pontiroli serves as a senior adviser in the Office of the President of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Andrea coordinates the team’s work on migration, refugees and humanitarian issues. He also serves as the liaison to the group of Western European and Other States (WEOG).

Andrea has more than 15 years of experience on complex political issues, security, humanitarian emergencies and post conflict contexts. Working since 2013 within the institutions of the European Union, and with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) before – both in the field and at Headquarters – he has focused his attention on political and security crisis management, migration and displacement, human rights, humanitarian law and humanitarian assistance.

Before joining the Office of the President, Andrea worked at the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations on international migration from 2017 to 2018. From 2015 to 2017 he was responsible for Libya at the European External Action Service and prior to that, from 2013 to 2015, for Free Movement of Workers inside the European Union at the European Commission.

Andrea holds a degree in Management of International Institutions from Bocconi University in Milan, and a Masters of Sciences in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He speaks English, French, Spanish and Italian.

Andrea is an Italian citizen and an official of the European Union. He is seconded to the Office of the President by the European External Action Service.
