PGA PAYS RESPECT TO VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS OF 11 SEPTEMBER 2001

The President of the General Assembly has issued a tweet this morning to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks against the United States, which took place in 2001.

Ms. Espinosa said that on this 18th anniversary of September 11, we need to remember, reflect and never forget what happened.

The PGA expressed her solidarity with all the bereaved families, and paid tribute to the lives of all people who perished. 

The GA President said that she stands in solidarity with the United States, the American people and with all of those who lost their loved ones in the terrorist attacks.

 

PRESIDENT ESPINOSA REITERATES CALL FOR ACCELERATED ACTION IN MEETING WITH GROUP OF INDEPENDENT SCIENTISTS

The President of the General Assembly has reiterated her call for accelerated action following a meeting with a group of independent scientists, who worked on the 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR).

Ms. Espinosa received the team in her office yesterday, where she was presented with a copy of the report, which was compiled by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

The PGA commended the work of all contributors and said that more must be done to accelerate action for sustainable development. 

She congratulated the group of scientists on finalizing the report.

Ms. Espinosa noted also that the world faces a climate emergency and that changes must be implemented rapidly in order to reverse losses in climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, inequalities and other areas.

Earlier this month, the PGA’s Office launched a social media campaign with Member States and Heads of State and Government on the Sustainable Development Goals Summit, the SDG Summit, which will be held here in New York on 24 and 25 September. GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO HOST LAST HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

The General Assembly will hold, tomorrow 12 September, the last Informal High-Level Event on women’s empowerment.

Women in Power – Call to Action & Women Leaders – voices for change and inclusion, will take place on Thursday afternoon from 3 pm. at the ECOSOC chamber.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa, the PGA-elect, Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and Ms. Susana Malcorra, from Women Leaders – Voices for Change and Inclusion.

In the afternoon, there will be two panel discussions on synergies between global networks that encourage women’s participation and support the sharing of knowledge and experience. More details on our website www.un.org/pga/73

 

PGA’S AGENDA:

This morning, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa met with the Permanent Representative of Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr. Frederick Musiiwa Makamure Shava.

She later granted an interview to EFE news agency and held a bilateral meeting with the Ambassadors of Fiji and Ireland.

This afternoon, Ms. Espinosa will talk to CNN in Spanish and Televisa before meeting the President of ECOSOC, H.E. Ambassador Mona Juul in the PGA’s office.

 

 LAST PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE PGA ON 16 SEPTEMBER

On Monday, 16 September, Ms. Espinosa will grant her last press conference. 

She will talk to the correspondents here at the Briefing Room at 11 a.m.

The last press conference will be webcast through UN WebTV.
