IN AUSTRIA, PRESIDENT ESPINOSA MEETS FOREIGN MINISTER AND TAKES PART IN CELEBRATIONS OF 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF UN HQ’S IN VIENNA

The President of the General Assembly has begun her official visit to Austria, where she met, this morning, the country’s Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, H.E. Alexander Schallenberg, in Vienna.

Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa praised Austria’s strong commitment to multilateralism, to the rule of law, to advance women empowerment and to actively contribute to supporting countries to implement and achieve the 2030 Agenda.

In her meeting with Mr. Schallenberg, the PGA also discussed climate action and disarmament.

The PGA later attended an event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Vienna International Centre, the Headquarters for the United Nations in Vienna.

Ms. Espinosa was received by the heads of UN agencies, which are based in Vienna, including Director General, Mr. Yury Fedotov.

She later held separate bilateral meetings with the chiefs of agencies and signed the book of condolence for the former director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Yukiya Amano, who died last month.

PGA TO MEET PRESIDENT AND CHANCELLOR OF AUSTRIA ON SATURDAY 

Tomorrow, Saturday 24 August, Ms. Espinosa will travel to Alpbach, accompanied by the President of Austria, H.E. Mr. Alexander Van der Bellen, and the country’s Federal Chancellor, H.E. Ms. Brigitte Bierlein. 

They will take part in the European Forum, where the PGA will be a keynote speaker.

Ms. Espinosa will hold a bilateral meeting with the former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the former President of Austria, Mr. Heinz Fischer.

Whilst in Austria, the GA President is granting interviews to national and international media outlets.

Ms. Espinosa and her delegation will be back in New York on Sunday.

 

 

 

MS. ESPINOSA TO HOLD LAST PRESS CONFERENCE ON 16 SEPTEMBER

The President of the General Assembly will hold her last press conference here at the Press Briefing Room on 16 September at 11:00 a.m.
