IN RUSSIA, PRESIDENT ESPINOSA MEETS FOREIGN MINISTER, SERGEY LAVROV, TO DISCUSS GA PRIORITIES
The President of the General Assembly has arrived in Moscow for an official trip to the Russian Federation.
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa was received by the Russian Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Sergey Lavrov.
They spoke about Russia’s cooperation with the UN, the country’s contribution to peacekeeping, to strengthening multilateralism, and to the work agenda of the General Assembly.
Ms. Espinosa also commended the announcement made by President Vladimir Putin, early this month, of the Government’s decision to submit legislation to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement by September this year.
The PGA and Mr. Lavrov also discussed the preparations for the High-Level Week including High-Level meeting on Climate, the Universal Health Coverage, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit, the High-Level Dialogue Financing for Development and the Mid-Term Review of the SAMOA Pathway.
Ms. Espinosa highlighted the need for accelerated action in order to achieve by SDGs by 2030.
The PGA and the Russian Foreign Minister discussed several political issues such as Yemen, the conflict in Syria, and the situation in Libya among other topics.
Ms. Espinosa reiterated her appeal in urging all relevant parties to continue working towards attaining lasting and peaceful solution.
The President of the General Assembly also visited the seat of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, where she stressed the importance of cooperation by all faiths and religions in order to prevent intolerance and hate speech.
She also held separate bilateral meetings with the acting chairman of the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly, Russia’s Parliament, H.E. Mr. Alexander Zhukov, and with the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Sergey Ryabkov.
Ms. Espinosa’s official trip to Russia will end on Wednesday, 31 July, when she will return to New York.
PGA ANNOUNCES PLANS ON HIGH-LEVEL DIALOGUE ON FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT
Ms. Espinosa sent a letter to Member States on the PGA’s plans for the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development. The meeting will take place on 26 September (pursuant to resolution 69/313) in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.
The opening session will include two interactive dialogues which will discuss the use of public resources for more equal, sustainable societies, and the financing of the SDGs against rising debt burdens. Delegations are invited to make statements.
The afternoon session will also include two interactive dialogues on “moving the money to fill the climate action and the SDG financing gap” and on “announcements and new initiatives”.

PGA CONGRATULATES UN ENVIRONMENT AND UN STAFF IN NAIROBI ON JOINING CAMPAIGN AGAINST SINGLE-USE PLASTIC
Ms. Espinosa has issued a tweet congratulating UN Environment and the UN staff in Nairobi, Kenya, on joining the Play it Out campaign against single-use plastics. Ms. Espinosa noted that through their support and action, the Nairobi UN Headquarters is now single-use plastic free.
The GA President said that to beat plastic pollution has become the battle of our time.
She has invited Member States, international organizations and individuals to join forces and to end the use of single-use plastics everywhere in the world.
