POLITICAL WILL, PARTNERSHIPS AND ACTION ARE CRUCIAL TO ACHIEVE THE SDGS, PGA ESPINOSA SAYS AT HIGH-LEVEL FORUM

The President of the General Assembly has spoken this morning at the opening of the Ministerial Meeting of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). The three-day-meeting is taking place until 18 July under the theme “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality“.

In her address, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa said that the hope of 7.7 billion people of the world lies in the 2030 Agenda. The PGA believes that achieving sustainable development for all is the best way to prove that collective action is capable of transforming people’s lives everywhere.

Ms. Espinosa identified three crucial steps to achieve the Sustainable Developments Goals: political will and wisdom, partnerships and action and ambition.

The PGA thanked Member States for their active role in preparing the High-Level Political Forum and the upcoming SDG Summit, in September. Ms. Espinosa also stressed the need to prioritize actions to address urgent challenges to pave the way for dealing with longer-term risks. She highlighted the importance of the full inclusion, and empowerment women and girls to achieve the 2030 Agenda.

The President commended the role of the of co-facilitators Sweden and Bahamas as well as all Member States for their support with achieving a consensual text to be adopted as a Political Declaration by Heads of State and Government in September.

Ms. Espinosa closed her speech by quoting Ms. Eleanor Roosevelt when saying: “Tomorrow is now. It is today that we must create the world of the future”.

In total, 47 Member States will present their voluntary national reviews (VNRs). The VNRs will review in depth, Goals 4 on quality education; 8 on decent work and economic growth; 10 on reduced inequalities; 13 on climate action; 16 on peace and justice strong institutions and 17 on partnerships.

MS. ESPINOSA EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH VICTIMS OF FLOODS IN SOUTH ASIA

In a tweet this morning, the President of the General Assembly has expressed her solidarity with people affected by the floods in South and Southeast Asia.

The season of monsoons has caused over 100 deaths in Bangladesh, India, Myanmar Nepal and Pakistan.  Tens of thousands of people are displaced. Ms. Espinosa expressed her sadness for the loss of lives and sent her condolences to the families of the victims, the peoples and the Governments of all five countries.

 

PGA’S AGENDA

The PGA spoke at the opening of the Ministerial Meeting at the GA and met the Minister of Labour, Migration and Social Security of Spain, Ms. Magdalena Valerio. She also received in her office, Ms. Maria Flachsbarth and Ms. Rita Schwarzeluhr-Sutter, Members of the Parliament of Germany. Ms. Espinosa held separate bilateral meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, H.E Mr. Dionísio Babo Soares, and the President of the House of Representatives of Uruguay, H.E. Ms. Cecilia Bottino.  This afternoon, the PGA will receive Members of the Parliament of Pakistan, Ms. Maleeka Bokhari and Ms. Kanwal Shauzab.
