PGA TO HOST PRESS CONFERENCE ON GENDER EQUALITY WITH EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF UN WOMEN AND MS. HELEN CLARK
The President of the General Assembly will hold a joint press conference on gender equality and women’s leadership for a sustainable world, on Monday, 15th July, from 12:30 pm. to 12:50 pm.
The press conference will take place here at the Briefing Room.
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa will be joined by the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and Ms. Helen Clark, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand. They will deliver opening remarks and take your questions.
The press conference, which will be webcast by UN Web TV, is taking place on the margins of the informal plenary meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Leadership for a Sustainable World.
The General Assembly will host the eminent Group of Gender Equality Leaders established by the PGA, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa, last year as one of her top priorities to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The event will also provide a platform to follow up on the President of the General Assembly high-level event on ‘Women in Power’, held on 12 March 2019, and will aim to identify best practices to implement the key action points included in the ‘Call for Action’, released during the event.
The PGA, the PGA-elect, H.E, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande and the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed will deliver opening remarks followed by two panel discussions on Women’s Leadership, a Call to Action and Gender Equality and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development. Among the participants are Ms. Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Head of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Secretary-General of the Ibero-American Organization, Ms. Rebecca Grynspan and Mr. Guy Ryder, Director-General of the International Labour Organization, ILO.
Both panels will be moderated by the Permanent Representatives of Switzerland, H.E. Mr. Juerg Lauber, and of Rwanda, H.E, Ms. Valentine Rugwabiza.
The informal plenary meeting will bring together this diverse group of leaders who share a common goal: to accelerate the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women in their own communities and around the world.
In line with the theme of this year’s High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, the event will focus on empowerment, equality and inclusion as critical elements to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Ms. Espinosa has met this morning with the co-facilitators for the alignment of the GA Agenda with the 2030 Agenda, H.E. Ms. Maria Helena Lopes de Jesus Pires, Ambassador of Timor-Leste, and H.E. Ms. Marie Chatardová, Ambassador of the Czech Republic. Ms. Espinosa later received the Chief of General Staff of Slovenia, Ms. Alenka Ermenc.
The PGA granted separate interviews to Ms. Sarah Glover, the President of the National Association of Black Journalists, and Ms. Kacie Candela of Pass Blue. This afternoon, she will receive at her office, the new Ambassador of France to the UN, H.E. Mr. Nicolas de Rivière.
