MULTILATERALISM REINFORCES SOVEREIGNTY, PGA SAYS
The General Assembly is today hosting the High-Level Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
In her remarks, the President of the General Assembly explained that multilateralism in the only way possible to solve global challenges.
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa also stressed the importance of dispelling myths such that; multilateralism leads to less sovereignty for national States. She said that the opposite is the case: multilateralism instead reinforces sovereignty.
The President of the General Assembly recalled that in September, most of the world leaders who spoke at the General Debate clearly expressed their support for multilateral diplomacy.
The PGA affirmed that there is a unique opportunity to address the question of mistrust in international institutions and other international actors by producing more efficiency and more transparency. Ms. Espinosa says that to tackle violence, the world needs more diplomacy and more dialogue, and that to effectively respond to unilateralism, the world needs more solidarity and more collective action.
The meeting will be concluded at 6 pm. today. There are 73 speakers inscribed to take the podium.

The President is holding a bilateral meeting with the Permanente Observer of the African Union to the UN, Ms. Fatima Mohammed. Later today she will receive in her office the Foreign Minister of Iran, H.E. Mohammad Javad Zarif. This afternoon, the PGA will meet the Commissioner of the European Union for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Ms. Vera Jourova, before she presides over the closing segment of the High-Level Meeting on Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
