PRESS BRIEFING BY MONICA GRAYLEY, SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT MARÍA FERNANDA ESPINOSA

PRESIDENT ESPINOSA WILL TRAVEL TO MEXICO AND CUBA

The President of the General Assembly will travel to Mexico and Cuba starting on Monday, 1 April. 

The objective is to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations.

In Mexico, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa will meet the country’s President, H.E. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Foreign Secretary, H.E. Marcelo Ebrard, the Secretary of Interior, the Secretary of Health, and the Secretary of Welfare among other members of the government. 

Ms. Espinosa will also hold talks with representatives of indigenous peoples in Mexico.

The PGA will visit the UN headquarters in Mexico City to hear about the work of UN agencies in a meeting with the UN Country Team.  

On Tuesday, 2 April, she will go to the Senate of Mexico for talks with the members of the Committee on Gender Equality. 

Ms. Espinosa will be received by the National Council on the Agenda 2030 on sustainable development. The President will meet women leaders in Mexico and other representatives of civil society.

The President will give a lecture on; “The Relevance of the UN and the challenges for multilateralism” and grant a press conference at the Foreign Secretariat. 

Before departing from Mexico, Ms. Espinosa will grant other interviews to national and international media outlets.

On 3 April, the PGA will arrive in Cuba, where she will meet President, H.E Miguel Díaz-Canel and the country’s Foreign Minister, H.E Bruno Rodríguez as well as other members of the government. 

Ms. Espinosa will lay a wreath at the José Martí Memorial. On 5 April, Friday, she will talk to the Federation of Cuban Women, meet the UN Country Team, and take part in a discussion with Cuban students of Foreign Relations about multilateralism.

The President of the General Assembly will be back in New York on April 6. Ms. Espinosa’s Delegation to Mexico includes her deputy Chef de Cabinet, her Spokesperson, her political advisor and her personal assistant.  To Cuba, the PGA will travel accompanied by her deputy Chef de Cabinet, a communications assistant, her political adviser and her personal assistant. All travel costs are being covered by the PGA’s office trust fund.

 

GA’S AGENDA AND OTHER ISSUES:

Ms. Espinosa has started her day by meeting students of Universidad de las Américas of the National Model United Nations. She later received in her office the President of Slovenia, H.E. Borut Pahor.

She will also have meeting with the co-facilitator on Universal Health Coverage, the Ambassador of Georgia, H.E. Kaha Imnadze and the Permanent Representative of Thailand, H.E. Vitavas Srivihok.

Ms. Espinosa will grant an interview to EFE News Agency and late afternoon, she will speak at the closing of the High-Level Meeting on Climate and Sustainable Development for All.
