Good afternoon, everyone!

GA TO WELCOME FEMALE HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENT TO #WOMENINPOWER EVENT NEXT WEEK

Tomorrow, International Women’s Day, at 11 a.m., the President of the General Assembly will hold a press conference here at the Briefing Room to all UN correspondents.

Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa will talk about the high-level event, WomenInPower,  which will take place on Tuesday, 12 March, at the General Assembly Hall.

Ms. Espinosa will address the opening segment which will also be attended by the Secretary-General, António Guterres, the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzille Mlambo-Ngucka, and the Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), H.E. Ms. Geraldine Byrne Nason.

The Presidents of Lithuania, Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, will be present at the first high-level round-table on “How Women Leaders Change the World”, which is also being attended by the Vice-President of Colombia and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Federica Mogherini.

This activity will be followed by a second round-table on the same theme with the Presidents of Croatia, Estonia, the Prime-Minister of Iceland, and the Vice-President and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Panama.

The last high-level round-table of the WomenInPower event will address the Future of Women’s Leadership with the First Vice-President of Costa Rica, the Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Minister for Cooperation and African Integration of the Republic of Guinea, the Chief of the General Staff of Slovenian Armed Forces, the Ambassador for UN Women in Pakistan, Ms. Muniba Mazari, and the former President of Ireland, H.E., Mary Robinson.

As you know, gender equality is one of the PGA’s seven priorities, and Ms. Espinosa says that much more must be done to promote women in positions of leadership.  Last year, for example, among the 2018 Fortune 500 companies, only 24 had women CEOs, and 12 companies had no women at all on their board.
