PGA COMMENDS CANADA ON MULTILATERALISM, SUPPORT FOR GLOBAL COMPACT FOR MIGRATION AND GENDER EQUALITY

The President of the General Assembly is back in the office this morning after her official trip to Canada yesterday. Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and commended his role in the promotion of a stronger multilateralism, gender equality, and for his support for the Global Compact for Migration, as well as tackling climate change.

Ms. Espinosa and Mr. Trudeau discussed the upcoming Intergovernmental Conference on the Global Compact for Migration in Morocco, which will take place in Marrakech, in December. The PGA and the Prime Minister talked about the UN Conference on Climate Change, COP-24, in Katowice, Poland, which Ms. Espinosa will attend. The PGA was particularly grateful for the opportunity to talk directly to women migrants at the Bruyere Centre for Immigrants, an Immigrant Women Services Ottawa (IWSO). Most of the women had suffered violence before arriving at the centre and are now trying to integrate and settle into a new life in Canada.
