Senior Adviser, Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women

Ms. Aqeelah AKBAR

Ms. Aqeelah Akbar began her career with the Foreign Service of Antigua and Barbuda in 1990 as an intern at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations. She has spent her career in international relations engaged on matters related to social development, advancement of women, child protection, employment, human rights and humanitarian affairs within the Antigua and Barbuda Foreign Service and with UN entities including UNICEF and the ILO. She served as a delegate at the preparatory meetings for the Fourth World Conference on Women, the World Summit on Social Development and the World Conference on Human Rights and as Advisor to the Chairperson of the Special Session of the General Assembly on Children and as Representative to the Third Committee during Antigua and Barbuda’s Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China. She holds a BA degree in Communications and a Masters in Public Administration. Ms. Akbar is a national of Antigua and Barbuda.
