{"id":161461,"date":"2018-06-14T17:02:51","date_gmt":"2018-06-14T21:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/?p=161461"},"modified":"2018-06-18T18:24:56","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T22:24:56","slug":"highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-14-june-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/72\/2018\/06\/14\/highlights-of-press-briefing-by-spokesperson-14-june-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Highlights of press briefing by spokesperson \u2013 14 June 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1><strong>HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT <\/strong><strong>MIROSLAV LAJ\u010c\u00c1K <\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span class=\"updated\">14 June 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.6&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u00a0PRESIDENT TO HEAD TO FINLAND, ROMANIA, GREECE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President <a href=\"\/pga\/72?p=161452\">will visit Finland from 17 to 18 June, Romania on 19 June, and Greece from 21 to 22 June<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In Finland, the President will address the Kultaranta Talks, a foreign and security policy debate hosted by the President of Finland.<\/li>\n<li>While in Finland, he will meet with Finnish officials, including: the President; the Foreign Minister; the Interior Minister; the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development; the Speaker of Parliament; and the Chairperson of the Parliament Group for Global Issues.<\/li>\n<li>He will also meet with the former Prime Minister of Sweden and member of his Team of External Advisers, Carl Bildt; and two former Presidents of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari and Tarja Halonen.<\/li>\n<li>In Helsinki, President Laj\u010d\u00e1k will also visit a reception center for migrants and the Crisis Management Initiative.<\/li>\n<li>In Bucharest, the President Laj\u010d\u00e1k will receive an honorary degree from the National University of Political Studies and Public Administration of Romania.<\/li>\n<li>He will also meet with Romanian officials, including the President; the Foreign Minister; the Foreign Policy Adviser to the President; and the Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs.<\/li>\n<li>In Rhodes, Greece, President Laj\u010d\u00e1k will address the third Rhodes Conference for Security and Stability.<\/li>\n<li>He will be back in the office on Monday 25 June.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>EMERGENCY SPECIAL SESSION ADOPTS RESOLUTION ON PROTECTION OF PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2018\/ga12028.doc.htm\">resumed the General Assembly\u2019s tenth emergency special session<\/a> yesterday afternoon. The Assembly adopted a <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/ES-10\/L.23\">resolution entitled \u201cProtection of the Palestinian civilian population\u201d<\/a> \u2014 by a vote of 120 in favour to 8 against with 45 abstentions.<\/li>\n<li>By that resolution, the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit a report within 60 days, outlining proposals on ways and means for ensuring the safety of Palestinian civilians, including on an international protection mechanism.<\/li>\n<li>Asked how the President felt about the resolution adopted yesterday, the Spokesperson said the President stood behind it, just as he stood behind all General Assembly resolutions.<\/li>\n<li>Responding to questions about whether the United States\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/en\/A\/ES-10\/L.24\">proposed amendment<\/a> to yesterday\u2019s resolution had required a two-thirds majority to pass, the Spokesperson noted that the President had followed rule 84 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/ga\/about\/ropga\/\">General Assembly\u2019s Rules of Procedure<\/a>, which states, \u201cDecisions of the General Assembly on amendments to proposals relating to important questions, and on parts of such proposals put to the vote separately, shall be made by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In response to further questions, the Spokesperson said that rule 71, which was cited by the United States, did not relate to two-thirds majorities or simple majorities. Rather, it simply states: \u201cDuring the discussion of any matter, a representative may rise to a point of order, and the point of order shall be immediately decided by the President in accordance with the rules of procedure. A representative may appeal against the ruling of the President. The appeal shall be immediately put to the vote, and the President&#8217;s ruling shall stand unless overruled by a majority of the members present and voting.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Asked whether all amendments to resolutions required two-thirds majorities to pass, the Spokesperson said that this was the case if they were related to \u201cimportant questions\u201d. He noted that the General Assembly considered that the 10<sup>th<\/sup> emergency special session was dealing with \u201cimportant questions.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>WORLD CUP CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>On Twitter this morning, the President <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN_PGA\/status\/1007290881911771136\">welcomed the start of the World Cup<\/a>. He said the General Assembly values the strong links between sport and peace.<\/li>\n<li>He added, \u201cEven in wartime, a football can bring people together. We might have different customs or viewpoints. But once we step out onto a field, we\u2019re all the same.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>PRESIDENT DISCUSSES ROLE OF GROUPS AT U.N.
