United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon<\/em> was deployed to Southern Lebanon.<\/p>\nThis means that UNIFIL is one of this Organisation\u2019s longest-running peace missions.<\/p>\n
And, it has achieved a\u00a0lot, in its four decades.<\/p>\n
And to keep this numerical theme, I\u00a0will mention four achievements, in particular.<\/p>\n
First, stability.<\/p>\n
When UNIFIL was first deployed, in 1978\u2026 stability was still a dream, for the people of southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
And, it has not been an easy road, since then.<\/p>\n
Even more challenges were created in 2006.<\/p>\n
Yet, the commitment of the men and women of UNIFIL did not waver.<\/p>\n
And, their work –\u00a0 together with the cooperation of the Lebanese Armed Forces\u2026and the resilience of the Lebanese people\u2013 has led to more than a decade of stability.<\/p>\n
Secondly, I want to focus on UNIFIL\u2019s role in development.<\/p>\n
The Mission is<\/em> under a Chapter Seven mandate, from the United Nations Security Council. But, it is far more than a military operation.<\/p>\nIn fact, UNIFIL has played a key role in the development of the community around it.<\/p>\n
Its Quick Impact Projects have had remarkable results.<\/p>\n
They have helped to build the skills of local olive farmers<\/p>\n
They have improved access to drinking water.<\/p>\n
They have built roads to better connect villages.<\/p>\n
They have worked to allow more children to access healthcare services.<\/p>\n
And, in doing so, they have made a big difference, in the lives of the people of Southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Thirdly, I will point to UNIFIL\u2019s work to implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda.<\/p>\n
The Mission delivers training for local elected women officials.<\/p>\n
Along with civil society groups, it hosts an annual Open Day on Women, Peace and Security.<\/p>\n
And, each UNIFIL battalion has a military gender task force.<\/p>\n
These are the kind of innovations we need to see more of, throughout our peace operations.<\/p>\n

So, I am glad that we are all gathered here \u2013 to reflect on the difference UNIFIL has made\u2026 to the stability, development and everyday life\u2026of the community it serves.<\/p>\n
But, in doing so, we cannot ignore the role played by the Government and people of Lebanon.<\/p>\n
And, while we pay tribute to those, serving, today \u2026.we must also remember those who were deployed, but never came home.<\/p>\n
UNIFIL has one of the highest fatality rates of any UN mission \u2013 with over 300 lives lost, since its first deployment.<\/p>\n

Good evening, everyone.<\/em><\/p>I want to start by thanking Ambassador Amal Mudallali, for hosting us all this evening.<\/p>
It has been 40 years since the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon<\/em> was deployed to Southern Lebanon.<\/p>This means that UNIFIL is one of this Organisation\u2019s longest-running peace missions.<\/p>
