Geneva, \u202a26 February 2018\u202c<\/em> \u2013 The President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, was in Geneva, Switzerland, today.<\/strong><\/p>\nAddressing the opening of the 37th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on 26 February, he said, “There are people, out there, now, who are counting on us to work even harder. They are sitting in jail cells, not because of who they murdered or what they stole, but because they wrote or spoke about what they believed…They are in physical or emotional pain because of which person they love, or which god they worship. They are calling out, from all over the world… We need to hear them, and we need to respond to them.”<\/p>\n
In a speech to the Human Rights Council\u2019s Annual High-level Panel on Human Rights Mainstreaming, he added, “Human rights are central to our humanity. They are not just a matter for conference rooms in Geneva, or in New York. First and foremost, they are a matter for people who may never enter these rooms. But, these people\u2019s voices are heard in the Universal Periodic Review.”<\/p>\n
The President also attended a meeting of the Conference on Disarmament. In his remarks, he said, “Disarmament is an essential part of peace. It cannot be reduced to the process, and actions, of removing arms or dismantling stockpiles. Rather, disarmament must also be seen and used as a confidence-building measure. It can bring parties to the table. It can serve to ease tensions and prevent escalations.”<\/p>\n
While in Geneva, the President held a number of bilateral meetings.<\/p>\n
He briefed the Federal President of the Republic of Austria, H.E. Mr. Alexander van der Bellen, on developments in the General Assembly, including in relation to the Global Compact on Migration, financing of the Sustainable Goals, conflict prevention, youth and United Nations reforms.<\/p>\n
In a meeting with the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, H.E. Mr. Dragan \u010covi\u0107, he discussed developments in both the General Assembly and Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n
He also met with the Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah. The President urged Afghanistan to participate strongly in the events that he would be convening in the coming months, including on peacebuilding and sustaining peace, water, youth and the Sustainable Development Goals. They also talked about the latest developments in Afghanistan and the region, as well as Afghan-United Nations relations.<\/p>\n
With the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Norway, H.E. Ms. Ine Eriksen S\u00f8reide, he discussed preparations for a high-level meeting on the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.<\/p>\n
The topic of his meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, H.E. Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s, was the work of the General Assembly. The two touched on a number of themes, including migration, sustaining peace, financing the Sustainable Development Goals, water, youth, United Nations reforms and the importance of multilateralism.<\/p>\n
He also discussed internal dynamics in Venezuela with that country’s Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Jorge Arreaza.<\/p>\n
In a meeting with the Vice Foreign Minister of Japan, H.E. Mr. Manabu Horii, he spoke about the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan-United Nations relations, migration and Security Council reform. He thanked Japan for its support to his office and encouraged its robust participation in his upcoming events on peacebuilding, water, youth and financing for development.<\/p>\n
With the President of the Human Rights Council, H.E. Mr. Vojislav \u0160uc, he discussed the work of the Council and its cooperation with the General Assembly. Both agreed that the United Nations must be modern, streamlined, coherent, relevant and able to meet the needs of the people who it is meant to serve.<\/p>\n
He also discussed the work of the General Assembly and Human Rights Council with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.<\/p>\n
In his meeting with World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, he talked about preparations for the first United Nations High-level Meeting on Tuberculosis, the third High-level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases and the General Assembly’s work on universal health coverage.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, the President is expected to meet with members of the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform before departing for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.<\/p>\n
