United Nations, 11 September 2017<\/em> \u2013 H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k\u00a0was sworn\u00a0in today as the President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Placing his hand on the Charter of the United Nations, the President said, \u201cI solemnly declare that I shall truthfully perform my duties and exercise the functions entrusted to me as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in all loyalty, discretion and conscience, and that I shall discharge these functions and regulate my conduct with the interest of the United Nations only in view and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the code of ethics for the President of the General Assembly, without seeking or accepting any instruction in regard to the performance of my duties from any Government or other source external to the Organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Laj\u010d\u00e1k became the second President of the General Assembly to take this oath of office, which was established by General Assembly resolution A\/RES\/70\/305 on 13 September 2016. The resolution, entitled \u201cRevitalization of the work of the General Assembly\u201d, also established a code of ethics for the President.<\/p>\n

The President, a national of the Republic of Slovakia, has served as his country\u2019s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs since 2012. His priorities for the 72nd\u00a0session include peace and conflict prevention; migration; a sustainable planet; human dignity; and modernizing the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The first official meeting of the 72nd\u00a0session of the United Nations General Assembly will be held on Tuesday, 12 September 2017.<\/p>\n

President-elect of UN General Assembly outlines priorities to Indian officials in New Delhi<\/span><\/h2>

\u00a0<\/p>

New Delhi, India,\u00a028 August 2017\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 The President-elect of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k, today concluded a two-day visit to New Delhi. While in the Indian capital, he met with H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India; H.E. Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of India; H.E. Mr. M.J. Akbar, Minister of State for External Affairs of the Republic of India; and the United Nations Country Team in India, headed by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Yuri Afanasiev.<\/strong><\/p>

At the invitation of Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, President of the Governing Body and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Research and Information Systems for Developing Countries (RIS), the President-elect also met with a group of experts on the United Nations to exchange views on the overall work of the Organization and possibilities for its further improvement.<\/p>

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, the President-elect outlined his priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session, including improving the lives of all people, preventing conflict, sustaining peace, addressing migration, advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, tackling climate change and promoting human rights. He thanked the Prime Minister for India\u2019s contribution to his office\u2019s trust fund and added, \u201cI have always believed in the United Nations. And I am counting on India\u2019s continued support to ensure that the Organization remains relevant and capable of helping the world to find solutions to current challenges.\u201d The two also discussed the fight against terrorism, poverty and youth radicalization, as well as the role of regional organizations in the international system.<\/p>

Upon meeting the Minister for External Affairs, the President-elect thanked her for inviting him to visit India. Their talks then focused on Security Council reform, revitalization of the General Assembly, terrorism, the Sustainable Development Goals, migration, climate change, investing in youth and sustaining peace. On human rights in general, the President-elect stressed that the international agenda must remain overarching and non-politicised, especially since human rights violations were often the first indicator of impending conflict.<\/p>

The President-elect was accompanied to India by his Chief of Staff, H.E. Mr. Franti\u0161ek Ru\u017ei\u010dka, and his Spokesperson, Mr. Brenden Varma. Travel costs were covered by the Government of India.<\/p>
