HIGHLIGHTS OF PRESS BRIEFING BY BRENDEN VARMA, SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT MIROSLAV LAJČÁK

 GENERAL ASSEMBLY’S 72ND SESSION TO WRAP UP ON MONDAY

  • Monday 17 September will be the last day of the General Assembly’s 72nd session.
  • On Monday morning, the plenary will take action on a draft resolution entitled “Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly”.
  • Regarding agenda items that are currently still open, the plenary will take a decision on transmitting them to the next session, as per normal practice.
  • Then, in the afternoon, at 3:00 p.m., President Lajčák will deliver concluding remarks for the session. The President-elect of the 73rd session, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, will then take her oath of office. She’ll be the third President to take such an oath. The Secretary-General is also expected to be present.
  • Following the meeting, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the President of the 73rd session will speak to reporters at the stakeout outside the General Assembly Hall on the 2nd floor.

  • Regarding the first ever Nelson Mandela Peace Summit, which will be held on 24 September, a list of speakers has now been published on our web site.
  • 141 speakers are currently inscribed.
  • That includes 44 Heads of State and 24 Heads of Government, in addition to the other high-level dignitaries.
