Bell ceremony to close NASDAQ stock market

8 June 2018

Statement by H.E. Mr. Miroslav Lajčák, President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, at bell ceremony to close NASDAQ stock market

The fact is that I’m here representing the General Assembly of the United Nations.

And the General Assembly is the most representative and the most democratic international body. 193 countries working side by side, close to each other. And dealing with all kinds of issues. But each having one vote regardless of whether the country is big or small, rich or poor.

And at the United Nations, we focus on peace and security. We focus on development. And we focus on human rights.

But above all, we focus on people.

Because the truth is that our world is getting smaller. And our neighbours’ problems are our problems.

And we need to work together to fix these problems.

I’m glad to say that we do have a programme. We do have a plan to solve these problems, and it’s called the Sustainable Development Goals.

17 goals addressing all the major challenges we are facing today, from hunger and poverty to education, economic growth, clean oceans, justice and peace.

So the plan is there.

Now we have to make sure it turns into a reality. And for this we need the private sector.

And this is exactly the reason why on Monday, I’m inviting top business executives to the United Nations – to discuss how to work together, how to finance the Sustainable Development Goals, and how to make sure that we live in prosperity, on a healthy planet and in peace.

Thank you very much for your attention.
