Thematic Breakout Session “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”

Objectives

  • To inform about the most essential priority challenges in need of action to ensure protection and sustainable use of oceans, seas and related ecosystems, such as those reflected in SDG 14: marine pollution, ecosystems, climate change and ocean acidification, fisheries, marine protected areas and sustainable livelihoods related to ocean activities;
  • To give an overview of ongoing youth consultations on SDG 14 and discuss related key messages;
  • To discuss and identify potential roles of youth in the international efforts in these subjects and discuss the way youth can contribute to these efforts;
  • Serve as an input to the ongoing Oceans/SDG14 Conference Process, as well as the considerations of SDG 14 under the 2017 HLPF;
  • A special focus will be to raise awareness of the marine litter issue and seek input from participants on the Global Campaign on Marine Litter.

Opening of the ECOSOC Youth Forum

WHAT?

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, to be held on 30-31 January 2017, will provide a platform for youth to engage in a dialogue with Member States and share ideas on innovation, collective action and solutions to global problems. It will also address the concept of “shared prosperity”, which is at the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

WHO?

The forum will bring youth leaders from around the world to the UN Headquarters in New York. It will give them the opportunity to engage with policy-makers and other youth delegates and representatives.

HOW?

This two-day event will feature interactive dialogues among representatives from youth organizations, high-level and other keynote speakers. A number of sessions will be held on aspects of the themes for the Economic and Social Council and the High-level Political Forum and space will be created for regional perspectives. A Ministerial Roundtable, The UN’s Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals and a diverse group of YouTubers will also take part in the discussions aimed at supporting multilateral approaches led by the United Nations

Into the Zone: Youth Marketplace on Social Innovations for Health and Wellbeing – Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals

Engaging young people as key agents for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and emphasizing the need to empower them to achieve sustainable development are at the center of President Peter Thomson’s SDG Implementation efforts.

Accordingly, in partnership with Every Woman Every Child, he is organizing a digital Youth Marketplace on Social Innovations for Health and Wellbeing: Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in the margins of the ECOSOC Youth Forum. The event, which will highlight the transformative power of meaningful youth engagement, will take place on 31 January 2017 from 9am – 10am in Conference Room 6, United Nations Headquarters, in New York.

The event will connect young people in the Youth Forum SDG Media Zone and with youth around the world.

ACHIEVING THE SDGs: HARNESSING THE POWER OF YOUTH

The annual Youth Forum of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is a platform where young people can contribute to policy discussions at the United Nations through their collective ideas, solutions and innovations. The Forum allows representatives of youth-led and youth-focused organizations and networks, youth advocates and others to dialogue with Member States, and to explore ways and means of promoting youth development and engagement.

The SDG Media Zone will join the sixth ECOSOC Youth Forum on January 30 – 31 in New York to broadcast live dynamic discussions and interviews featuring SDG Youth Advocates, YouTubers and social media influencers. Each day #SDGLive will engage the online global audience on how to address the Sustainable Development Goals together.
