President of the UN General Assembly to visit Indonesia, Singapore and Switzerland

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 21 February 2017 – The President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, will travel to Indonesia, Singapore and Switzerland, from 20 to 27 February 2017, for high-level meetings and official engagements, with the purpose of strengthening momentum in the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

In Bali, Indonesia, President Thomson will speak at The Economist’s fourth World Ocean Summit, where he will discuss the importance of SDG14, as well as key deliverables for The Ocean Conference to be convened at UNHQ New York, from 5 to 9 June 2017.

While in Bali, President Thomson will also meet with leaders and representatives of key global ocean initiatives, take part in the launch of United Nations Environment Programme’s Clean Seas Campaign and hold bilateral meetings with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs of Indonesia, H.E. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, the Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, Mr. Karmenu Vella, the Executive Director of UNEP, Mr. Erik Solheim, the Minister of Sea of Portugal, H.E. Ana Paula Vitorino, the Vice-President for Sustainable Development of the World Bank, Ms. Laura Tuck, and the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia, H.E. Susi Pudjiastuti.

In Singapore, President Thomson will hold meetings with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Vivian Balakrishnan, and the Second Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Albert Chua, for discussions on aspects of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

In Geneva, Switzerland, President Thomson will participate in the opening session of the Human Rights Council and the High Level Panel on Human Rights Mainstreaming. He will also  participate in bilateral meetings with the President of the State of Palestine, H.E. Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Human Rights Council, H.E. Joaquín Alexander Maza Martelli, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, and the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. H.E. Motome Takisawa.

The President will be accompanied on different stages of this trip by Senior Advisers Francella Strickland, Danny Rahdiansyah and Ramis Sen. Travel and accommodation expenses for the President and accompanying officers will be covered by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Trust Fund, the Government of Singapore and The Economist.
