President of the UN General Assembly to visit Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and the World Economic Forum

UNITED NATIONS, New York, 12 January 2017 – The President of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, will travel to Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Switzerland, from 13 to 20 January, to participate in high-level meetings and official engagements, with the purpose of advancing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting the broader agenda of the General Assembly.
In Doha, President Thomson will attend an informal retreat on Security Council reform and participate in official bilateral meetings. He will then travel to the United Arab Emirates to attend the Seventh Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and speak at the opening segment of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The President will also participate in official meetings while in Abu Dhabi.
In Geneva, President Thomson will meet with the President of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Xi Jinping, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. António Guterres, to discuss development issues and the China-UN relationship, among other topics. The President will also meet with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Margaret Chan; the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Filippo Grandi; and the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr. Guy Ryder. While in Geneva, President Thomson will also participate in a high-level meeting focused on building a community of common destiny for mankind.
Before returning to UN Headquarters in New York, President Thomson will stay in Davos for two days to attend the World Economic Forum and related events, where he will engage with business leaders on issues on the UN agenda including the Sustainable Development Goals and The Ocean Conference, which will take place in New York from 5 to 9 June, 2017.
“I look forward to the discussions with leaders from China, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as with the heads of United Nations agencies. I am also keen to connect with the participants and other stakeholders at the IRENA Assembly, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and the World Economic Forum, to generate ideas, opportunities and the maximum momentum possible in support of SDG implementation,” President Thomson said.
The President will be accompanied by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Chef de Cabinet, Ambassador Tomas Anker Christensen. Senior Advisers Danny Rahdiansyah, Jullyette Ukabiala and Zhang Yi, and Adviser Mohammed Al-Buainain will accompany the PGA on different stages of this trip. Travel and accommodation expenses for the President and accompanying officers will be covered by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Trust Fund, the World Economic Forum and the Governments of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
