Statement by the President of the UN General Assembly on United Nations Day, observed on 24 October 2016

24 October 2016, United Nations, New York: On occasion of the celebration of the United Nations Day, the President of the UN General Assembly H.E. Peter Thomson issued the following statement:

“United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of our Organization’s founding document, the UN Charter. Its observation is an annual reminder of the long and often difficult road Member States have decided to travel together. We are sustained by common aspiration as defined in the Purposes and Principles of the Charter,” President Thomson said.

“I salute the fact that this year’s UN Day will be used to highlight concrete actions that people can take to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The central thrust of the General Assembly’s 71st Session is to achieve momentum in the implementation of all 17 SDGs,” he added.
