Statement on the awarding of the 2016 Nobel Prize for Peace to President Santos of Colombia
UNITED NATIONS, New York, 7 October 2016 — The President of the United Nations General Assembly H.E. Peter Thomson extends his congratulations to President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia on his being awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Peace.
“The award is a recognition of President Santos’ resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end. It is also a tribute to the people of Colombia who, even in the face of great hardships, continue to believe in the achievement of a stable and lasting peace for their country,” he said.
The President of the United Nations General Assembly commends the efforts made by all parties involved and reiterates his pledge of continued support to the Colombian peace process.
