Statement by the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, on Colombia
3 October 2016, New York, United Nations – Having observed the results of yesterday’s referendum on the Peace Agreement signed by the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia – People’s Army (FARC-EP), I welcome the vows made by both parties to maintain the ceasefire established on 29 August 2016.
I join the UN Secretary-General in his belief that all must be done to maintain calm and prevent any return to violence, and am confident that sustainable peace will be achieved.
I wish to recognize the efforts made by all parties involved towards building a stable and lasting peace that is acceptable to the people of Colombia and pledge my continued support to the Colombian peace process.
