Meeting of the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson with First Vice-President of the European Commission H.E. Frans Timmermans
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson, met with the First Vice-President of the European Commission, H.E. Mr. Frans Timmermans, on 18 September 2016. The discussions focused on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. The President of the General Assembly and the First Vice-President of the European Commission concurred that the universality of the Sustainable Development Goals requires an integrated approach and coherence between the international and internal efforts. They highlighted the importance of education in raising public awareness of the Agenda for Sustainable Development. The President of the General Assembly and the First Vice-President of the European Commission also discussed the need to advance the swift ratification and implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. President Thomson expressed appreciation for the important role of the EU in both advancing sustainable development and combatting climate change. He also thanked First Vice-President Timmermans for his active participation, as Co-Chair of one of the Round-tables, in the UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants on 19 September.
