High-level Thematic Debate on UN, Peace and Security – Views from the field and civil society

The 10 – 11 May 2016 High-level Thematic Debate of the UN General Assembly focused on UN, Peace and Security provided a platform to reflect on concrete ways to draw out synergies from the most recent UN peace and security reviews, including i.a. the review of UN peace operations [on the basis of both, the High Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations and the Secretary-General’s report on the future of UN peace operations], the Peacebuilding Architecture Review and the Global Study on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security.

All those reviews and processes were inspired by the sense that the UN needs urgently to keep pace with evolving challenges and threats to international security. Each of the reviews has and should retain separate legislative standing and procedures. However, they contain a significant degree of substantive convergence and common policy directions. As such, they form a mutually supportive set of recommendations, which need to be translated into action within a reasonable time frame.

A number of prominent research institutions, civil society organizations, think tanks with global and regional reach have expressed the wish to contribute to this reflection and to inform the debate through workshops and meetings open notably to representatives from Member States, regional and sub-regional organizations, the private sector.

True to the commitment of the General Assembly to enhance transparency and inclusiveness, the President of the General Assembly is strongly encouraging such engagement.

The organisation of those workshops and meetings as well as their outcome fall under the sole responsibility of the individual organisers.
