Statement on US-China Climate Ratification from the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Mogens Lykketoft
New York, 3 September 2016 – ‘I am pleased to hear this very good news coming out of Hangzhou just before the opening of the G20-meeting: The Presidents of China and United States – the two major economies and CO2-emitters – have announced their ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement.
During my meetings with Chinese leaders in Beijing last October I got very strong support for urgent Climate Action. China’s own ambitious action plan is now rolling with announcement of guidelines for establishing a Green Financial System and a goal for green projects of US$600 billion each year.
The China-US ratification and the great Chinese initiatives put useful pressure on those UN-members that have not yet ratified or made their own national action plans.
