The President of the UN General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft met with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister H.E. Dr Hailemariam Desalegn today.

The meeting took place at State House on the last day of the President’s visit to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The Prime Minister thanked the President for his leadership of the UN General Assembly, including the selection process of the next UN Secretary-General, and said Ethiopia was proud to have been a founding member of the United Nations.

Saying Ethiopia was at the forefront of the action on sustainable development, the President invited the Prime Minister to participate in the High-Level Thematic Debate on SDG implementation on 21 April and to share Ethiopia’s experience.

Mentioning his visit to the Jesuit Refugee Centre yesterday and briefings he received from the Representatives of UNHCR and the Danish Refugee Council, the President commended the Prime Minister on Ethiopia’s commitment to remaining open to refugees and promised to advocate for the funding required to feed them.

Mr Lykketoft said uncertainty about funding to feed the 730,000 refugees in Ethiopia after July 1 was unacceptable.
The Prime Minister thanked him for pushing donors on that issue adding that Ethiopia was also dealing with many Ethiopian people affected by a serious drought in the East of the country.
