On 2 October 2015, the President of the General Assembly, Mr. Mogens Lykketoft, participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends of Security Sector Reform (SSR) devoted to the topic of SSR and 2030 Development Agenda. The high-level event was organised by Co-Chairs of the Group of Friends of SSR, Slovakia and South Africa and took place at the International Peace Institute. The goal of the event was to explore the nexus between SSR and 2030 Agenda, particularly Goal 16 and its targets.

In his remarks, the President of the General Assembly emphasised that the 2030 Agenda presents a fantastic opportunity to build peaceful, inclusive and just societies, crucial to eradicating poverty and to advancing progress across the three pillars of the UN.

“This includes building effective, accountable, inclusive institutions such as in the security sector to improve governance; enhance civilian control, accountability and democratic oversight,” Mr. Lykketoft said.
