The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Mogens Lykketoft met with Mr. Timo Soini, Foreign Minister of Finland during the UN General Assembly high-level General Debate.
The leaders discussed the issue of nomination, selection and appointment of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations and underscored the importance of this process being transparent.
The President of the General Assembly noted that the members of the General Assembly want to have an increased role in the process.
The Minister also raised the issue of the reform of the UN Security Council process and expressed support on this important issue. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to its international responsibilities including the participation in UN peacekeeping and efforts in mediation.
Mr. Soini invited the President for an official visit to Finland given his country’s Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
The President briefed the Minister about his priorities at the helm of the General Assembly and his interactions with various stakeholders in recent weeks.
