The President of the General Assembly (PGA), H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, has learned with deep concern and profound sorrow about the devastating earthquake that has hit Nepal and surrounding regions in Bangladesh, India, and Tibet in the People’s Republic of China, killing and injuring scores of people, and unleashing large scale destruction.

On behalf of Member States, and on his own behalf, the President of the General Assembly sends his prayers and expresses the sympathy of the family of nations to Government and people of Nepal and all those affected by this disaster.

The President of the General Assembly thanks all countries and entities that have so far responded to the emergency. The PGA calls on all Member States and the international community to deploy all possible efforts to urgently assist and support the people and the Government of Nepal in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.

The President of the General Assembly continues to closely follow developments, and further urges the institutions of the United Nations system and the entire international community to remain fully engaged in support of Nepal and other affected areas in this tragedy.
