H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, President of the General Assembly with H.E. Mr. Zhang Gaoli, Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China and China’s Special Envoy for the Climate Change Summit

H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, President of the General Assembly (PGA) discussed with H.E. Mr. Zhang Gaoli, Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China and China’s Special Envoy for the Climate Change Summit, important issues on the agenda of the sixty-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly. Both agreed that it is critical to deliver on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, and underlined the need to secure means of implementation, including financial support, transfer of technology and capacity building.

They also discussed the reform of the Security Council and the revitalization of the General Assembly. As the United Nations prepares to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding, they underscored the need for Member States to take stock and uphold the values and principles of the Charter. The Chinese Vice Premier stressed the important role the General Assembly as a key organ of the United Nations system in safeguarding norms in international relations and boosting development while addressing the challenges of climate change. President Kutesa commended the People’s Republic of China for its achievements in addressing climate change and thanked Chinese authorities for their support to African countries fighting the Ebola outbreak.

Montenegro

PGA met with H.E. Mr. Filip Vujanovic, President of Montenegro. President Vujanovic underlined Montenegro’s contributions to support United Nations’ institutions and principles, including troop contributions in several United Nations peacekeeping missions such as Liberia and Cyprus. He noted that his country was committed to sustainable development and had begun to mainstream sustainable development in its internal policies. The President recalled the regional Sustainable Development Centre opened in Skopje, with UNDP support.

PGA congratulated Montenegro on its achievements and contributions to the United Nations. He highlighted the priorities of the sixty-ninth session, underlining the preparation for the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda. PGA recalled the commonalities between the Post-2015 Development framework and the Climate Change agenda.

Food and Agriculture Organization

PGA also met with Mr. José Graziano da Silva, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The Director General briefed the President on the upcoming Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) which will take place in Rome from 19 to 21 November 2014. They discussed agriculture in relation to food security, employment, market access and trade barriers, and the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The Director General commended the PGA for his leadership.
