The President of the General Assembly (PGA), H.E. Mr. Sam Kahamba Kutesa, met today in New York with H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

The PGA congratulated the Foreign Minister for his recent appointment, adding that he looked forward to working with him during the current session.

The PGA and the Foreign Minister of Turkey discussed the priorities of the 69th Session, such as the Post-2015 Development Agenda and its implementation, climate change, gender and women empowerment, United Nations reforms, including the reform of the Security Council and the revitalization of the General Assembly. The Foreign Minister of Turkey assured President Kutesa of his full support for the priorities listed by the PGA.

The Foreign Minister briefed the PGA on Turkey’s active involvement in mediation, counterterrorism and the Alliance of Civilizations. They exchanged views on the G20 meeting Turkey will chair in 2015; the first ever World Humanitarian Summit the country will host in 2016; and its chairmanship of the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). They noted that these undertakings can further promote the implementation of a transformative post-2015 agenda.

President Kutesa thanked Turkey for its contribution to the development, peace and security and humanitarian fields.

The PGA briefed Minister Çavuşoğlu on the high-level meetings and thematic debates he intends to hold during the current session.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey welcomed President Kutesa’s initiatives and expressed his appreciation for PGA’s efforts in the General Assembly to mobilize support in addressing the Ebola outbreak.
