Statement of the Peacebuilding Commission

Presidential run-off elections

New York – 30 March 2018

The Peacebuilding Commission congratulates Sierra Leone for the successful conduct of Sierra Leone’s presidential, parliamentary and local council elections that took place on 7 March 2018.

The Commission also welcomes the efforts of all stakeholders towards ensuring a professional, transparent and credible polling process, in line with national and international frameworks, and the work of the National Electoral Commission in the preparation and conduct of the polling process.

The Peacebuilding Commission is closely following developments in Sierra Leone ahead of the Presidential run-off elections scheduled to take place on 31 March 2018.

The Peacebuilding Commission calls on all political parties, particularly the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), and their leaders to exercise restraint in respect of democratic principles, avoid any form of divisive and inflammatory rhetoric, and urge their supporters to refrain from violence. The Commission emphasizes its confidence that all Sierra Leoneans will engage and participate peacefully in the process.

The Peacebuilding Commission assures all national stakeholders of its commitment to support Sierra Leone throughout the electoral process and continue its political accompaniment and advocacy role.
