The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes, under Sustainable Development Goal 17, a call to revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development, including through multi-stakeholder partnerships that mobilize and share knowledge, expertise, technology and financial resources toward achievement of the Goals. 

The United Nations Office for Partnerships serves as a gateway for partnership building between the private sector, foundations and other non-State actors and the United Nations system in furtherance of the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this role, the Office has four primary functions:

In April 2020, the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, supported by the United Nations Office for Partnerships, launched the Women Rise for All initiative as part of the Decade of Action to reach the Sustainable Development Goals – the blueprint for a healthier, more equitable and more peaceful world. The initiative aims to look at how the leadership of influential women is shaping the COVID-19 response and efforts to build back better.

Women Rise for All has grown significantly since its launch. To date, the initiative has engaged over 50 women leaders from different parts of the world to advance the United Nations (UN) Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 recovery.

In response to the global Coronavirus crisis, and the urgent need to reach the widest possible audience with fact based messaging, the United Nations issued an OPEN BRIEF to the creative community through the SDG Strategy Hub inviting the world’s creatives to develop engaging content around key six areas based on WHO and UN priority actions. Over a brief two weeks, tens of thousands of artists all across the world have come together to support the United Nations and WHO's efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19.

On 9 May, the new class of SDG Advocates was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.These 17 influential public figures are committed to raising awareness, inspiring greater ambition, and pushing for faster action on the SDGs. The Advocates will use their unique platforms and leadership to inspire cross-cutting mobilization of the global community.

The 2019 ECOSOC Partnership Forum, co-organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Office for Partnerships, and the United Nations Global Compact, aimed to review multi-stakeholder partnerships around the SDGs in focus during the HLPF, and showcase good practices and lessons learned on the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in driving inclusion and impacts.
