UN Insurance Sector Summit

17 June 2015

The UN Office for Partnerships and the International Insurance Society convened the UN Insurance Sector Summit, as the third day of the annual IIS Global Insurance Forum.

The Summit gathered leaders of insurance companies, research institutions, UN officials, public policymakers and civil society organizations and explored the role of the insurance industry in creating partnership initiatives to support the emerging Post-2015 Development Agenda and drive economic growth, financial stability, affordable healthcare and global environmental security. The event provided a platform to discuss specific initiatives aimed to mitigate global disaster and climate change risks and support sustainable economies. It featured the industry’s most prominent thought leaders addressing key issues around the Forum theme “Filling the Protection Gap” and addressed topics such as investment for resilience and sustainable development, overcoming barriers to micro-insurance adoption, building sustainable markets through financial inclusion, and sustainable insurance.

The Summit was opened by the UN’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and featured other speakers such as Amina Mohammed (Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Post-2015 Development Planning), Janos Pasztor (Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change), Craig Churchill (Chief, Social Finance Programme, International Labour Organization), Butch Bacani (Programme Leader, UNEP Finance Initiative), Rowan Douglas (Chair, Insurance Development Fund & Chairman, Willis Research Network), Abel Lee (Director, Head of Insurance & Asset Management, World Economic Forum), Martin Hintz (Head of Microinsurance, Allianz).
