In Liberia, a significant and transformative shift is underway as women, who were once the custodians of the traditional practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), are now leading the charge for change while embracing new livelihoods. Among these courageous leaders is Ms. Rebecca Yaoh, a former advocate for FGM, whose journey has been pivotal in this transformation. Following her participation in the training provided by the Spotlight Initiative, Ms. Yaoh gained profound insights into the harmful effects of FGM.

A mid-term review of Uganda's Third National Development Plan, pivotal for SDG implementation, shows only a 17% achievement rate.

This year’s Conference of Parties (COP) marked its twenty-eighth year. As with other years, COP28, which just concluded in Dubai, UAE, had moments of intense negotiation, reflection, and innovation. It also has the usual mixed bag of various pledges and, at times, self-congratulatory announcements where different entities got to show their contributions to making the planet a green haven, as well as the many others lamenting how inaction and greenwashing will be the death of us all.

Nigeria’s child population is large and growing. Children (0-18 years) account for half of the 210 million strong population. By 2030, when all children should have access to inclusive, quality education, Nigeria will account for 17 per cent of the children in Africa and 5 per cent of the children in the world. What happens to children in Nigeria matters significantly to regional and global development.

Young people in Dar es Salaam came together in July to create a greener future for themselves and the planet! Inspired by the urgency of climate action, students from various schools and communities joined forces with UNICEF and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) to plant over 150 indigenous and endemic plants and tree saplings. Their efforts resulted in the establishment of a remarkable 40 square-meter micro-forest within the UNICEF Head Office in Oyster Bay.

In Maranyundo Girls School in the Bugesera district of Eastern Rwanda, ten young girls are glued to a table in their school, completely immersed in what they refer to as "the Maker Space." With hushed voices and brimming with enthusiasm, they exchange ideas, working on what looks like a vibrant tapestry of sketches, delicate metals, and whimsical car-like contraptions. These are actually small robots that the girls are working together on building.
