Adapting development finance to address the vulnerability challenge in LDCs and other vulnerable countries

Monday, 12 April 2021 - 1:15pm

The Covid-19 crisis has further exposed the vulnerabilities faced by the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and current development finance mechanisms tend to overlook the extreme vulnerabilities that hold them back.

As COVID-19 threatens to roll back years of development progress and exposed the inadequacy of international support measures, we must urgently re-examine how to assess and address the social and economic vulnerabilities of LDCs and other vulnerable developing countries.

In this context, the LDC5 Conference in Doha will be pivotal in the international community's efforts to support to the most vulnerable countries.

As a precursor to LDC5, the Foundation for Studies and Research on International Development (FERDI), the OECD Development Centre and UN-OHRLLS are joining forces to deepen the debate on how development finance can make support to LDCs more adapted to their high vulnerability.

On the sidelines of this year's ECOSOC Financing for Development Forum, this event is an opportunity to put forward new financing policy proposals specifically tailored to help LDCs overcome their vulnerabilities. This includes more and better assistance to address vulnerabilities, stimulate economic activity and pave the way to long-term recovery and sustainable development.
