Shri Mukesh D. Ambani is Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, India's largest private sector company.

Mukesh Ambani joined Reliance in 1981 and was the brain behind Reliance's backward integration from textiles into polyester fibres and further into petrochemicals. During the process of backward integration, Ambani led the creation of 51 new, world-class manufacturing facilities involving diverse technologies that raised Reliance's manufacturing capacities manifold.

Working hands-on, Ambani led the creation of the world's largest grassroots petroleum refinery at Jamnagar, India, with a capacity of 660,000 barrels per day (33 million tonnes per year), integrated with petrochemicals, power generation, port and related infrastructure. He led the set-up of another refinery next to the one in Jamnagar, leading to an aggregate refining capacity of 1.24 million barrels of oil per day, making Jamnagar the “Refining Hub of the World.”

Ambani also established one of the largest and most complex information and communications technology initiatives in the world, Reliance Infocomm Limited (now Reliance Communications Limited).

He also steered Reliance's development of infrastructure facilities as well as the implementation of a pan-Indian retail network.

Ambani is a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry, Government of India and the Board of Governors of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi.

In 2007, Ambani became a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and was elected as Vice Chairman of the WBCSD Executive Committee in 2008.

He is also a member of the Indo-U.S. CEOs Forum, the International Advisory Board of Citigroup, the International Advisory Board of the National Board of Kuwait, the Advisory Council for the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, the International Advisory Board of Brookings, the International Advisory Board of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the Business Council and the McKinsey Knowledge Advisory Council.

Ambani holds a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bombay and a Masters in Business Administration degree from Stanford University, USA.

He was born on 19 April 1957 in Mumbai. His father, Dhirubhai Ambani, was a small businessman who later on rose to become one of the legends of Indian industry.

Ambani has many achievements and honours to his name. He was chosen as the ET Business leader of the Year 2006. In 2004, he received the World Communication Award for the Most Influential Person in Telecommunications, by Total Telecom. He was also awarded the Asia Society Leadership Award by the Asia Society in Washington D.C., USA.
