The United Nations provides financial support for the participation of representatives of LDCs in annual sessions of the General Assembly (GA). The UN pays for the travel, but not subsistence expenses, as follows:
- Up to five representatives per LDC attending a regular session of the GA.
- One representative per LDC attending a special or emergency session of the GA.
- One member of a permanent Mission in New York designated as a representative or alternate to a session of the GA
For further details, please see the Guidelines shared with Member States by the United Nations Department of Administration.
In 2011 the GA decided to extend the above travel benefits, if requested, within existing resources, to Cape Verde and Maldives for a period appropriate to the development situation of the country and to a maximum of three years. This same benefit would be granted “if requested, within existing resources, and for a period appropriate to the development situation of the country and for a maximum of three years, to any other country that graduates from least developed country status.” See General Assembly Resolution 65/286.
