With funds provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SISA), Organization for Women for Science for Developing World (OWSD) has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs, who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a Ph.D., at centres of excellence in the developing countries, outside their own country.
The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries.
Utilization by LDCs:
From 1998 to 2017, OWSD has awarded 423 PhD scholarships to young women scientists from developing countries. Of these 212 have graduated (115 were from LDCs) and a further 211 are ongoing.
