Strengthening Human Security in the Border Communities of Turkana, Kenya

Duration: July 2012– June 2015
Budget: US$6,328,828
Implementing Agencies: UNDP (lead), IOM, FAO, ILO, UNICEF, WHO, OCHA

Today, Central Turkana suffers from a ‘climate change-migration-conflict’ nexus. Cycles of severe and recurring drought have resulted in a significant drop in livestock production, increasing competition over scare resources, growing incidences of violent conflicts and lawlessness, high rates of malnutrition and regular outbreaks of communicable diseases due to lack access to adequate water, sanitation and hygiene.

By strengthening pastoral production systems, improving access to basic education for out-of-school children and youth, enhancing the delivery of basic social services, and advancing skills training in alternative livelihoods, the programme aims to reduce inter-communal and cross-border tensions and preserve the resilience and dignity of pastoral nomadic communities. Specifically, the programme seeks to: (i) improve food security and expand livelihood choices for pastoral nomadic communities; (ii) ensure access to basic healthcare and education for those most vulnerable, including children, women and youth; and (iii) promote peace and prevent recurring incidents of conflict through the provision of early warning systems and peacebuilding activities.
