Measuring Human Security, Human Development and Inequality in the SDGs Context

Expert Group Meeting on:

Measuring Human Security, Human Development and Inequality in the SDGs Context

Co-organized by UNDP/Human Development Report Office (HDRO) and UN Human Security Unit (HSU)

With the support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

26 March 2020 – Conference Room 8, UN Headquarter, New York

About the Event

Human Security, Human Development and Inequality are all key elements for achieving the SDGs. As the 2019 Human Development Report has shown, multidimensional inequalities – beyond income, beyond averages and beyond today – are a key obstacle to enhancing people’s capabilities and their aspiration to live free from fear, want and in dignity.

In line with Human Development Report Office’s groundwork to link the human development paradigm with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in its 2020 report, this Expert Group Meeting (EGM) will explore the connections between human security, human development and inequality, with specific emphasis on measurement issues. Some of the questions it will explore include:

• What are existing indicators for measuring human security?
• How to capture concepts such as dignity and self-worth in measurement and policy making?
• Can the Human Development Index be expanded (or supplemented) to account for these additional dimensions?
• How can new indicators about environmental sustainability enrich the measurement of human security and human development?
