The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross is a six-part documentary series written and presented by prominent Harvard University professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Each episode contains an in-depth demonstration of the Africa-American experience, from the origins of the transatlantic slave trade to the reelection and second inauguration of former President Barack Obama. In the segment filmed at the United Nations, Professor Gates discusses the petition brought by singer and actor Paul Robeson on behalf of African Americans to the UN in 1951, which accused the U.S. Government of genocide. The series was broadcast on PBS in the United States.
CCOI facilitated on-location filming at UN Headquarters of Prof. Gates’ interview with Paul Robeson’s biographer Martin Duberman and coordinated the related legal and logistical arrangements.
