Working Group on Global Fundamental Geospatial Data Themes

Background

In its Decision 9/111 in August 2019, under its Agenda item on 'global fundamental geospatial data themes', the Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management noted the alignment of the 14 geospatial data themes with the broader work programme of the Committee of Experts, including the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework and the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework, and the efforts of the working group to take into consideration the particular needs of developing countries with regard to measuring and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals. The Committee of Experts expressed its appreciation and congratulated the Regional Committee of United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Europe and the working group for their leadership in developing the 14 geospatial data themes, and commended the working group for having successfully achieved its objectives and completed its tasks.

The Working Group was tasked to:

  • Produce a recommendation for a minimum list of global fundamental geospatial data themes. Each data theme will be supported by a description and short guidelines.
  • Take account of existing activity being undertaken by UN-GGIM regional committees ensuring that where possible existing resources are used.
  • Consider the prioritisation of the data themes and how they link to other data needs within the UN-GGIM programme of work.
  • Consider the specific needs and vulnerabilities of small-island developing States.
  • Ensure that the data themes are technical in nature as not to raise political concerns.
