Forests’ Director Honoured with Prestigious Award

Jan McAlpine, Director of the UN Forum on Forests Secretariat within DESA, was awarded the Fernow Award by the German Forest Society at a commemorative event on September 23, at the historic town hall of Aachen. The Fernow Award recognizes individuals for outstanding achievements in international forestry.

Ms. McAlpine was recognised for her extensive achievements over the last three years on behalf of the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat, including, in particular, her accomplishments related to activities in celebration of the International Year of Forests, 2011.

The award was established in 1965 by joint agreement between the American Forest Association and the German Forest Association (Deutscher Forstverein). Each association alternates in selecting the laureate. The German Forest Association was founded 112 years ago and is the oldest professional organisation combining the different interests of German foresters and forest owners. With more than 7000 members, the association constitutes the single largest platform of the forest sector in Germany.

Jan McAlpine has been Director of the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat since November 2008. Ms. McAlpine has worked on environment, trade and social issues for over 30 years. Prior to joining the UN, Ms. McAlpine served with the United States Department of State as Senior Negotiator and Advisor for Forests.
