	Description	UNDP/UNSO provides administrative, financial and technical assistance to the Centre de Suivi Ecologique. Traditionally involved in monitoring vegetation in the Senegalese Sahel, the Centre has contributed to a greater understanding of ecological process and their impact on development. The Centre has more recently evolved and adapted its activities in function of needs for sustainable development.
	Issues addressed	Cross sectoral planning support; information for planning needs at the village level; self-financing.
	Objectives	Provide data products on the environment in support of planning needs of Government entities, private sector, and civil society organizations, and to provide products on demand to a variety of clients from donor, NGO, and private communities.
	Results achieved	An increasing orientation toward delivering products for management planning at the District level; A growing intersectoral approach toward information management, with increased emphasis on combining socio-economic and ecological data development of mechanisms for self-financing, although the Centre is not yet fully self-financing to date Development of national policy for the management of geographic information in support of planning for sustainable development.
	Lessons learned	The main lesson learned is that development assistance for environmental monitoring projects should not restrict themselves to simply data collection activities, when there is a growing demand for services (policy support) within the country.
