SUCCESS STORIES FROM ASIA AND THE PACIFIC

Cleaner Production in China: A Story of Successful Cooperation

Location China
Responsible Organization(s) National Protection Agency of China, China National Cleaner Production Centre, The World bank, UNEP/IEO.
Description The project consists of Clener Production case studies, policy study and dissemination.
Issues addressed Build local sustainable capacity for cleaner production through case studies and policy implementation.
Objectives Introduce the cleaner production approach to 3000 companies over the next five years and especially to the top 100 polluters in China.
Results achieved 690 no- or low-investment cleaner production options were identified in 29 cleaner production assessments carried out. The recommendations from the policy studies will provide a basis for a consistent and practical cleaner production policy.
Lessons learned The success of the project has been mainly due to: manuals in Chinese, early emphasis on in plant training, focus on cleaner production options which were simple to implement; involvement of all employees; combination of practical work and theoretical studies; parallel case studies with policy development.
Financing The World Bank.
