Science Alliance for Valuing the Environment: Education as Key to a Sustainable Future

Responsible organization Science Alliance for Valuing the Environment Inc. at Lourdes College and Sisters of Saint Francis
Description Appreciation of education, development of a nature centre and networking with other groups
Issues addressed Education and environmental awareness
Objectives Educate the members of the community in taking care of and valuing their environment
Results achieved
  • raised funds to sponsor 10 students in the elementary and junior high school grades for Summer Earth Camp
  • awarded USD65 and a certificate to students' environmental projects at Northwest District Science Day
  • held five annual banquets
  • offered annual award for a local eco-educator and eco-friend
  • held public lecture series on earth topics using an appreciation approach
  • produced a video entitled Sylvania: A Suburban Eco-City highlighting the environmental and eco-sensitivity of the city, in cooperation with the Mayor of the City of Sylvania, municipal officials and other local communities
  • published a quarterly newsletter
  • organized a "Life Lab" reaching nearly 6,000 children and 400 teachers annually, where children and adults could come to learn about and appreciate the natural world
  • networked with a variety of organizations interested in environmental issues
Lessons learned Importance of continuous involvement of community members in activities related to environmental protection
Financing Independent fund raising, and sponsorship by the Eisenhower Programme, the Ohio Environmental Education Fund, the Toledo Community Foundation and the Ohio Campus Compact Grant
